Kit Components:
  • Blue sensor board on which is soldered the VCNL4000, a decoupling capacitor, and a 2 x 8 pin connector
  • USB connector which supplies "clean" power to the sensor board
  • CD Development software which includes a Quick Start menu and a software licensing agreement.

The sensor board can be plugged into the USB in the up or down orientation. An indicator light will be illuminated when the sensor board is receiving power and connected to the development software.

Vishay Semiconductor VCNL4000 Fully Integrated Proximity and Ambient Light Sensor is the industry's first optical sensor combining an IR emitter, PIN photodiode, ambient light detector with 16-bit resolution, and an I2C interface. These features are integrated to greatly simplify window optics, the PCB layout, and communication functions, all with a low standby current consumption of 1.5 µA. The combination of the proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, and infrared emitter into a single component not only simplifies the design-in process by making a mechanical barrier unnecessary, but virtually eliminates optical crosstalk in smart phones. The Vishay Semiconductor VCNL4000 Fully Integrated Proximity and Ambient Light Sensor uses a modulated signal for proximity to eliminate DC light noise. Demo Kit available below.

about optical crosstalk
Designing a discrete IR emitter, proximity sensor, and ambient light sensor into a smart phone and avoiding optical crosstalk is next to impossible. Combining the proximity and ambient light sensor into a single package is one step in the right direction but it still leaves the difficulty of isolating the emitter from these detectors. The VCNL4000 takes that next step by integrating a proximity and ambient light sensor with the infrared emitter. This stand-alone, single component greatly simplifies the design-in by making the mechanical barriers unnecessary. The VCNL4000 is the industry's first optical sensor to offer proximity and ambient light sensing with 16-bit resolution and I2C interface. It has the industry's best range of up to 20 cm (8 in).

Application Circuit Information
VCNL4000 is a cost effective solution of proximity and ambient light sensor with I2C Bus interface. The standard serial digital interface is easy to access "Proximity Signal" and "Light Intensity" without complex calculation and programming by external controller.
