Vishay Semiconductors VCNL Proximity & Ambient Light Sensors

Vishay Semiconductors VCNL Proximity & Ambient Light Sensors are optical sensors each combining an IR emitter, PIN photodiode, ambient light detector, signal processing IC, with 16-bit resolution, and an I²C interface. These features are integrated to greatly simplify window and sensor placement, PCB layout, and communication functions in a wide variety of consumer and industrial applications. The combination of the proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, and infrared emitter into a single component not only simplifies the design-in process by making a mechanical barrier unnecessary, but virtually eliminates optical crosstalk in smart phones.

Vishay Semiconductors VCNL4020 Fully Integrated Proximity & Ambient Light Sensor combines an IR emitter, a photo-pin-diode for proximity, an ambient light detector, a signal processing IC, and a 16-bit ADC in one small 4.8 x 2.3 x 0.8mm rectangular leadless (LLP) package. The 3-in-1 sensor features an interrupt function, supports I²C bus communication interface, and greatly simplifies window and sensor placement in a wide variety of consumer and industrial applications. It also features the industry's lowest height of 0.8mm, and a 16 bit resolution.

For mobile devices such as smart phones, touch phones, PDAs, GPS units, and digital cameras, the new VCNL4020 saves power as a proximity sensor by turning off the display backlight when close to the user, while using its integrated ambient light function for display/keypad adaptive brightness control. Vishay Semiconductors VCNL4040 Fully Integrated Proximity & Ambient Light Sensor


Vishay VCNL4040 integrates a proximity sensor (PS), ambient light sensor (ALS), and a high power IRED into one small package. It incorporates photodiodes, amplifiers, and analog to digital converting circuits into a single chip by CMOS process. The 16-bit high-resolution ALS offers excellent sensing capabilities with sufficient selections to fulfill most applications whether dark or high transparency lens design. High and low interrupt thresholds can be programmed for both ALS and PS, allowing the component to use a minimal amount of the microcontrollers resources.

The patented Filtron™ technology achieves ambient light spectral sensitivity closest to real human eye response. It also offers the best background light cancellation capability (including sunlight) without utilizing the microcontrollers' resources. The VCNL4040 provides an excellent temperature compensation capability for keeping output stable under various temperature configurations.

Vishay Sensor Starter Kit

Vishay Sensor Starter Kit comes with a VCNL4020 sensor board, a USB connector, and all the necessary software, license, and driver files needed to have designers testing VCNL sensors for their applications in no time. This Vishay starter kit serves as the base for the VCNL4010, VCNL4020, VCNL4020X01, and VCNL3020 sensor boards, and the VCNL4020 gesture demo board. Every new digital sensor will also be available on a new sensor board, which can be connected to the USB dongle and operated with the starter kit software. The VCNL4020 is the default sensor board attached to the starter kit and is an ideal starting point to learn about proximity and ambient light sensors. The VCNL4010 and VCNL3020 are function and feature-wise the same as the VCNL4020, except that the VCNL3020 does not include the ambient light sensor. The VCNL4020X01 is nearly identical to the VCNL4020, although it covers the higher temperature range required for automotive applications and comes with a bit higher internal emitter intensity.
