TE Connectivity Metal Hybrid PPTC (MHP) Devices

Overview

TE's innovative MHP (Metal Hybrid PPTC) technology connects a bimetal protector in parallel with a PPTC (polymeric positive temperature coefficient) device.

TE Connectivity Metal Hybrid PPTC (MHP) Devices Design Diagram

The initial MHP product offering, the MHP30-36 and MHP-SA series, targeted higher-current (above 30Vdc, 30A) Li-ion battery pack applications used in portable power tools and energy storage systems.

The new MHP-TA series is intended for applications with lower voltage and current ratings.  As a result, TE Circuit Protection was able to downsize the MHP product to offer an ultra-compact device that meets the space requirements of the growing LiP market. In battery cell designs, the MHP-TA series helps provide resettable overtemperature protection, while utilizing the PPTC to act as a heater and to keep the bimetal latched until the fault is removed.

MHP

TE Connectivity developed the Metal Hybrid PPTC (MHP) Device as a cost-effective, resettable circuit protection device capable of providing 30A+ hold currents at voltage ratings over 30VDC for high-rate-discharge lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries. By connecting a bimetal protector parallel with a PPTC (polymeric positive temperature coefficient) device, the resulting Metal Hybrid PPTC Device offers resettable overcurrent protection while the low resistance of the PPTC device prevents arching of the bimetal protector at higher currents.

Features

  • 30A hold current
  • Rated at 36VDC, 100A max.
  • Low device resistance (< 2mOhm) compared to other breaker devices
  • Withstands heavy vibration and impact
  • Easy mounting between 18650 cells
  • Arc suppression: Current shunts to the PPTC due to its low resistance helping to suppress arcing all while helping protect the contacts from damage or welding shut
  • Double make/double break contact design allows for a high current rating in a smaller device package

Applications
  • Li-ion battery packs for high-rate-discharge applications
    • Cordless power tools
    • E-bikes
    • Back-up power supplies (UPS)
    • Back-up power for medical devices
  • Motor protection

MHP-TA

The MHP-TA series is based on TE Circuit Protection’s innovative MHP (Metal Hybrid PPTC) technology and is designed for applications with lower voltage and current ratings than previous series. As a result, TE was able to downsize the MHP product to offer an ultra-compact MHP-TA device that meets the space requirements of the growing Lithium Polymer (LiP) market. In battery cell designs, the MHP-TA series provides resettable overtemperature protection, while utilizing the PPTC to act as a heater and to keep the bimetal latched until the fault is removed.

TE's Metal Hybrid PPTC Devices with Thermal Activation (MHP-TA) Series consists of ultra-low profile (L: 5.8mm x W: 3.75mm x H: 1.15mm), resettable thermal cut-off (TCO) devices. This series offers a 9VDC rating, high and low current types, and multiple cut-off temperature ratings.

Features
  • 9VDC rating
  • Two levels of current carrying capacity:
    • Low current (approximately 6A hold current @25°C)
    • High current (approximately 15A hold current @25°C)
  • Multiple activation temperature ratings (72°C, 77°C, 82°C, 85°C, 90°C)
    • Miniature size allows for compact battery pack designs
Applications
  • Battery cell protection for high-capacity Lithium Polymer and prismatic cells used in:
    • Media tablets
    • Ultra-thin notebook PCs
    • E-readers
