Microchip RN-XVee Wi-Fi Modules

Microchip RN-XVee Wi-Fi Modules provide drop-in, certified Wi-Fi™ connectivity for existing systems using 802.15.4 modules. The RN-XVee Wi-Fi Modules are 802.11 b/g solutions especially designed for users who want to migrate their existing 802.15.4 architecture to a more standard TCP/IP based platform without having to redesign their existing hardware. The pin compatible footprint and simple ASCII configuration interface allows designers to quickly have the RN-XVee module up and running in existing 802.15.4 based products.

The Microchip RN-XVee Wi-Fi Modules support infrastructure networking for worldwide internet access directly by every node and AdHoc connectivity for fully connected point-to-point networks, unlike many 802.15.4 implementations that need extensive, custom network application profiles and additional bridging products. The RN-XVee supports industrial temperature ranges, making it ideal for applications such as sensor networks, industrial or commercial controllers, utility meters, and M2M applications.

The RN-XV module is based upon Microchip's robust RN-171 ultra-low power Wi-Fi module and incorporates 802.11 b/g radio, 32 bit SPARC processor, a complete onboard TCP/IP stack with a simple UART or SPI slave HW interface, real-time clock, crypto accelerator, power management unit, and analog sensor interface. The stack offers network services including IPv4 addressing with full WEP/WPA/WPA2 security, FTP/HTTP client, UDP, TCP, HTTP, Telnet, DNS, and DHCP, and Wi-Fi protected setup (WPS) amongst others.

The module offers additional functionality through its onboard programmable GPIOs (10) and ADCs (8). The ADCs provide 14-bit resolution while the GPIOs can be configured to provide standard functionality or status signaling to a host microcontroller to reduce the need for serial polling between the Wi-Fi module and host microcontroller. The module is pre-loaded with firmware to simplify integration and minimize development time of the user's application. In the simplest configuration, the hardware only requires four connections (PWR, TX, RX, and GND) to create a wireless data connection.

New! The Microchip RN-XV Wi-Fi Module series has been expanded to include the RN41XV/RN42XV Bluetooth Modules. The RN41XV Class 1 Bluetooth module is based on the RN41, and the RN42XV Class 2 Bluetooth module is based on the RN42. The RN41XV and RN42XV are small form factor, low power Bluetooth radio modules offering plug-in compatibility for the widely used 2 x 10 (2mm) socket footprint often found in embedded applications. These modules are simple to design in and are fully certified, making them a complete embedded Bluetooth solution. The RN42 is functionally compatible with the RN41. The Class 1 RN41 module has a range up to 100 meters. The Class 2 RN42 module has a range up to 20 meters.
