KEMET ENGINEERING KITS

KEMET currently offers a variety of engineering kits which exhibit their tantalum and ceramic capacitor technologies. KEMET kits are designed and assembled in order to provide active solutions to the passive component requirements characterized in professional OEM engineering design, prototyping, university lab research, and by hobbyist users. Each KEMET Kit contains a selection of popular capacitor values and a KEMET product catalog which contains outlined drawings, dimensions, marking format, recommended mounting pad dimensions, and ordering information.

What's in a KEMET Kit? Each kit contains 10 to 20 capacitor values. For the ceramic kits, there are 20 to 100 pieces of each value. For the tantalum kits, there are 20 pieces of each value. Each part type will be provided either in bulk or by carrier tape and will be clearly labeled with a KEMET ordering code for ease of identification. Please refer to the appended PDF datasheets for a complete listing of part types and quantities offered with each of our engineering kits.

KEMET Ceramic Kits

KEMET currently offers seven distinct Ceramic Engineering Kits which are designed to provide active solutions to the passive component requirements characterized in professional OEM engineering design, prototyping, university lab research, and by hobbyist users. Each kit contains a selection of popular capacitor values and a KEMET catalog which outlines drawings, dimensions, marking format, recommended mounting pad dimensions, and ordering information.

Each of KEMET's Ceramic Engineering Kits contains an assortment of 10-20 popular capacitor values. Quantities of each part type will range from 20 to 100pcs based upon kit type. Each part type will be provided either in bulk or by carrier tape and will be clearly labeled with a KEMET ordering code for ease of identification.

KEMET Tantalum Kits

KEMET currently offers seven distinct Tantalum Chip Engineering Kits which are designed to provide active solutions to the passive component requirements characterized in professional OEM engineering design, prototyping, university lab research, and by hobbyist users. Each kit contains 10 to 20 pieces of each part number in a strip of carrier tape clearly labeled with KEMET part number, as well as a KEMET catalog which outlines drawings, dimensions, marking format, recommended mounting pad dimensions, and ordering information.

The Tantalum Engineering kits contain capacitors that offer many advantages including low ESR, surge current robustness and multiple operating temperature ranges. While many applications use surface mount technology, a complete line of through-hole tantalum capacitors are available for down-hole, military and other demanding environments. KEMET's traditional MnO2 tantalum capacitors consist of a sintered anode of tantalum metal. This anode is porous thus providing increased surface area. An oxide layer is then formed, and this oxide layer becomes the capacitor dielectric. The oxidized anode is impregnated with manganese dioxide to form the cathode.

Tantalum polymer capacitors are a newer variation which replaces the manganese dioxide cathode with a solid conductive polymer cathode. KEMET polymer tantalum capacitors are recommended when very low ESR, increased temperature stability or benign failure mode is critical.

Engineering Kit for X and Y EMI Suppressor Capacitors

A capacitor for Electromagnetic Interference Suppression must be approved by a relevant authority either as a electromagnetic interference capacitor or as part of a complete unit of equipment. The standards for EMI capacitors are EN/IEC 60384-14:2005. The capacitors are subdivided into two groups, X and Y.

X capacitors are for use when failure of the capacitor would not expose anyone to danger of electric shock.

X2:
  • ≤2.5kV
  • IEC 60664 installation category II
  • general application purpose

Y capacitors are for use when a failure of the capacitor could expose someone to the dangers of electric shock.

  • Y1 - Double insulation or reinforced insulation, rated voltage ≤500 V, peak impulse voltage before endurance test 8.0kV
  • Y2 - Basic insulation or supplementary insulation, rated voltage ≥150 V, ≤300V, peak impulse voltage before endurance test 5.0kV

Note: A short circuit of a Y capacitor, or too high capacitance, is hazardous if the ground line should be open circuit or connected to ground through a too high resistance. The National Approval Boards stipulate the maximum permitted current towards ground for different applications. A frequent current value for household equipment and portable tools is ≤0.5mA.
