Atmel LED Drivers are system-centric, mixed-signal LED driver ICs. They serve the broad-based and rapidly growing backlighting and solid-state lighting markets with applications that include LCD TVs, PC monitors, specialty panels (industrial, military, medical, avionics, etc.), and general illumination. Atmel LED Drivers utilize a proprietary and patented combination of analog and digital circuit techniques. Additionally, by delivering a system-centric approach, these advanced devices provide solutions for local and global dimming, power management, signal conditioning, and smart interfacing. This allows electronic equipment manufacturers to significantly enhance product features, while improving power efficiency, reliability, and cost/performance.

Atmel MSL106x Six-String LED Drivers with Integrated 50V Switch,
±1% Current Balance, & Internal Digital Compensation


MSL106x are 6-string LED Drivers each incorporating a current mode boost regulator with a 50V internal switch and requires only a small inductor, output capacitor, and rectifier. The MSL1061 and MSL1064 also offer an I²C compatible serial interface. The wide 4.5V to 36V input voltage range makes these drivers suitable for many applications. 1MHz switching frequency allows small components while maintaining high efficiency. Each LED string powers up to 12 series LEDs, allowing a maximum of 72 LEDs. These ICs regulate LED current up to 25mA per string. They use a digital control loop that eliminates the need for external compensation components.

The MSL106x provide a 500:1 dimming range. Dimming is achieved via an external PWM signal with frequency up to 10kHz or by controlling the LED current using the IADJ pin (MSL1060) or the I²C serial interface (MSL1061/1064). String current can also be controlled with an ambient light sensor (ALS) and/or a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor based temperature sensor to modulate the string output intensity. This allows consistent light output over widely varying environmental conditions extending LED lifetimes.

Atmel MSL2040 Simple 4-string LED Driver with External
Current Sink MOSFETs, 5000:1 Dimming Range, & Per String PWM Input


The Atmel MSL2040 compact, high-power LED string controller uses external current control MOSFETs to sink up to 1A per string, with string current matching of ±0.5%. The MSL2040 drives four parallel strings of LEDs and offer fault detection and management of open circuit and short circuit LEDs. Peak string currents are set using current sense (FET source) resistors and adjustable with an internal 8-bit DAC.

The MSL2040 adaptively controls up to two DC-DC converters that power the LED strings, using Atmel's Adaptive SourcePower™ technology. These efficiency optimizers minimize power use while maintaining LED current accuracy. Multiple MSL2040s cascade to automatically negotiate the optimum power supply voltage when driving more than four strings from a single power supply.

The MSL2040 features fault control for open-circuit strings, LED shortcircuits, and device over-temperature conditions. This driver also features stand-alone operation, and the basic circuit requires just one to four external PWM dimming inputs. An I²C serial interface is provided to allow optional control and monitoring of the various fault detection and Adaptive SourcePower parameters, but is not required for operation.

Atmel MSL2100/308x 8-string, High-power, White or RGB LED Drivers
with E2PROM, I²C Interface, & Adaptive Power Control


Atmel MSL2100/308x compact, high-power LED string drivers use external MOSFETs to provide up to 1A (MSL2100), 500mA (MSL3082), or 350mA (MSL3085) per string, with current accuracy and matching better than ±1%. MSL2100/308x drives eight parallel strings of LEDs, and offers fault detection and management of open and short circuit LEDs.

MSL2100/308x features a 1MHz I²C serial interface. The interface supports video frame-by-frame LED string intensity control for up to 16 (MSL2100/3082) or 8 (MSL3085) interconnected devices, allowing active area dimming when used for video displays. The advanced PWM engine synchronizes LED timing with the video signal, and offers phase shifted string drive, virtually eliminating waterfall noise and motion blur.

MSL2100/308x adaptively controls up to three DC-DC converters, which power the LED strings, using Atmel's patented Adaptive SourcePower™ technology. These efficiency optimizers minimize power use while maintaining LED current accuracy, and allow multiple interconnected devices to automatically negotiate the optimum power supply voltages.

A unique combination of peak current control and pulse width dimming management offers simple full-screen brightness control, versatile area dimming, and a consistent white point. LED string current is set for each string using a current sense (FET source) resistor. LED current is also digitally controlled for all eight LED strings.

Atmel MSL216x/316x 16-string, White & RGB LED Drivers
with Adaptive Power Control, E²PROM, & SPI/I²C/SMBus Serial Interface


Atmel MSL216x/316x compact, high-power LED string drivers use external current control MOSFETs to sink up to 350mA (MSL216x) or 100mA (MSL316x) per string, with current accuracy and matching better than 1.5%. MSL216x/316x each drives 16 parallel strings of LEDs, and the MSL316x is able to drive 16 parallel strings of ten white LEDs each, for a total of 160 white LEDs.

The MSL2160 and MSL3164 feature a 20MHz SPI serial interface, and the MSL3163 offers a 1MHz I²C serial interface. Both interfaces support video frame-by-frame LED string intensity control for up to 8 (MSL216x) or 16 (MSL316x) interconnected devices, to allow active area dimming. The devices include an advanced PWM engine that synchronizes PWM dimming to the video signal for reduced motion blur and waterfall noise.

MSL216x/316x adaptively controls the DC-DC converters that power the LED strings using Atmel's Adaptive SourcePower™ technology. This scheme optimizes power consumption without sacrificing LED current accuracy. Global string current is adjustable with 8-bit control, global string drive pulse width is adjusted with an 8-bit global intensity register, and individual string pulse width is modulated with 12-bit control.

MSL216x/316x monitors the LED strings for open circuit, short circuit, loss-of-sync, and over-temperature faults, and provide a hardware fault output to notify the MCU. Detailed fault status and control are available through the serial interface. Additionally, an on-chip E²PROM allows the power-up defaults to be customized through the serial interface.

Atmel MSLB9061 & MSLB9082 Compact LED Driver Boards with I²C Interface


Atmel MSLB9061 & MSLB9082 Compact LED Driver Boards are complete LED backlight driver solutions using the Atmel MSL1061 and MSL3162 LED drivers for medium-sized LCD panels. The MSLB9061 board has 6 channels, each driving up to 12 series-connected LEDs at up to 30mA per channel. The MSLB9082 board has 8 channels, each driving up to 10 series-connected LEDs at up to 160mA per channel. The LED current can be reduced from full-scale through the I²C serial interface in 16 (MSLB9061) or 64 (MSLB9082) linear steps. Digital (PWM) dimming is available through an external signal or by using the internal PWM generator via the serial interface.

The optional microcontroller board and graphical user interface (GUI) software allow control of the driver boards through a personal computer. This gives access to the internal features of the MSL1061 or MSL3162, including fault detection, digital control of LED current, individual LED string on/off control, and internally generated PWM dimming.

These compact six- and eight-channel LED driver boards are intended for evaluation, prototyping, or production runs. Gerber files and Cadence OrCAD layout files are available to allow the circuit to be integrated into a larger system for large production runs.
