Alpha Wire EcoGen™

EcoGen™ products are eco-friendly, high-performance wire and cable that are 100% recyclable. EcoGen products are designed with mPPE insulation which provides hook-up wire and control cable that are up to 65% lighter and 47% smaller, with up to 91% lower outgassing than products with traditional PVC insulation. The product line consists of EcoWire™ Hook-up Wire, EcoWire Plus Hook-up wire, EcoFlex™ Control Cable, and EcoCable® Control Cable.

AlphaWire EcoWire™ Hook-Up Wire

Alpha Wire EcoWire™ is the latest innovation in hook-up wire. A true engineering breakthrough, EcoWire achieves increased performance in a wire that is fully recyclable.

EcoWire™ Plus
provides improved fluid resistance for industrial applications, in addition to offering the benefits and characteristics of standard EcoWire™.

EcoWire derives its advantage from its unique insulation, a modified polyphenylene ether (mPPE) thermoplastic. mPPE-based insulation is non-halogenated and contains no heavy metal pigments, allowing it to help manufacturers meet Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) requirements.

In addition to its ecological benefits, Alpha Wire's EcoWire brings many performance advantages, including:

  • Minimized environmental impact - mPPE contains no halogens, phthalates, or heavy metals and meets RoHS and WEEE requirements.
  • Better dielectric strength - the superior dielectric properties of mPPE enables reduced wall thickness while maintaining the same electrical properties as PVC. The diameter of equivalent wires with mPPE insulation is up to 25% smaller than PVC-based wires. Figure 1 compares a 20AWG hook-up wire of PVC to the same wire with mPPE.

Adoption of mPPE-based products such as EcoWire should not be hindered by its perceived novelty. Underwriters Laboratories has approved mPPE as a suitable insulation for over fifty AWM cable styles; thus, it can be confidently applied where a tough, compact, and non-halogenated wire is required.

  • Low specific gravity - the 1.03 specific gravity of mPPE is 25% to 40% lower than other insulation materials such as PVC, polyethylene, and cross-linked polyethylene. Along with the reduced wall thickness, the low specific gravity yields significant weight savings of around 25%.
  • Flame resistance - mPPE meets UL VW-1.
  • Wide temperature rate - wires and cable with mPPE insulation meet UL 1581 requirements for operation at 80ºC and 105ºC.
  • Durability - even with thinner walls, mPPE offers 10x better abrasion and pinch resistance than PVC. Although it is not as thick, it is tougher. As shown in the comparison in Figure 2 below, mPPE's better tensile strength and lower hardness rating combine to provide a tough, durable, and flexible insulation.

  • Recyclable - plastics present significant disposal issues. Its harmful additives leak into the groundwater in landfills and produce toxic gases when burned. PVC can be recycled but it is not always technically feasible and rarely cost effective. Other common wire insulations present similar, if less severe, problems. On the other hand, mPPE is thermoplastic and more easily recycled as it does not contain the aforementioned hazardous materials.

Alpha Wire EcoFlex™ Cable

Alpha Wire EcoFlex™ Cable is an innovative new flexible control cable that has a minimum environmental impact. The cable contains no halogens, phthalates, or heavy metals and is 100% recyclable. The jacketing and insulation are constructed with polyphenylene ether (mPPE). This material gives the cables better performance benefits. Compared to standard PVC, EcoFlex cables with mPPE are up to 32% smaller, up to 55% lighter, and have up to 91% lower outgassing. In addition, the series is rated for over 1 million flex cycles and is capable of operating in extreme temperatures of -40ºC to 105ºC. EcoFlex Cable is available as unshielded, braid shielded, or with Suprashield® foil plus braid shield.

Alpha Wire EcoCable®

Alpha Wire EcoCable® is a new innovative control cable that offers better performance and minimum environmental impact. Modified polyphenylene ether (mPPE) jacketing and insulation provides the advantages of a smaller, lighter control cable that can handle extreme temperatures of -50ºC to 105ºC. EcoCable is up to 47% smaller and up to 65% lighter than PVC cable and is 100% recyclable. Weight savings of up to 65% are possible due to a low specific gravity of 1.03 which is 25% to 40% lower than other insulation materials such as PVC, polyethylene, and cross-linked polyethylene.  Three shielding options are available:  unshielded,foil shielded, and SupraShield® foil plus braid shield.
