Silicon Labs Ember® EM35x Integrated ZigBee/802.15.4 SoC

Ember® EM35x Integrated ZigBee/802.15.4 System-on-Chip (SoC) is now a part of the Silicon Labs family. The EM35x are fully integrated System-on-Chips that integrate a 2.4 GHz, IEEE 802.15.4-2003-compliant transceiver, 32-bit ARM® Cortex-M3 microprocessor, flash and RAM memory, and peripherals of use to designers of ZigBee-based systems. The transceiver uses an efficient architecture that exceeds the dynamic range requirements imposed by the IEEE 802.15.4-2003 standard by over 15 dB. The integrated receive channel filtering allows for robust co-existence with other communication standards in the 2.4 GHz spectrum, such as IEEE 802.11-2007 and Bluetooth. The integrated regulator, VCO, loop filter, and power amplifier keep the external component count low.

The EM351 and EM357 Ember® ZigBee chips are the industry's leading ARM Cortex-M3 based family of ZigBee SoCs delivering unmatched performance, power consumption and code density in a compact package. The EM351 and EM357 combine a 2.4 GHz IEEE 802.15.4 radio transceiver with a 32-bit microprocessor, Flash memory and RAM with powerful hardware supported network-level debugging features. Combined with the powerful ecosystem of ARM tools, these devices and tools enable OEMs to simplify development and accelerate time to market. The EM351 and EM357 SoCs are tightly integrated with EmberZNet PRO, a ZigBee compliant mesh networking software which is the most deployed ZigBee platform in the market. EM35x chips can be designed in as full system-on-chip (SoC) devices for low cost, low power sensors and other devices in the home, or as network co-processor (NCP) devices for more complex applications running on a large applications microprocessor.

The EM35x Series Radio Communication Modules are configured to use either the ceramic antenna or the on-board RF connector (U.FL). Some module variants also include a power amplifier. These configuration options are noted in the table shown below. The modules are shipped already installed on Breakout Boards. All other module variants are contained in the Module Variety Pack.

Development Tools

The Ember® ZigBee development environment dramatically shortens design cycles by uniting sophisticated network development and debugging tools. Ember AppBuilder is used to generate code for a ZigBee Smart Energy (ZSE), ZigBee Light Link (ZLL) or ZigBee Home Automation (HA) compliant device. The silicon-based packet trace port is a collection of minimally-intrusive hardware debugging features on the EM35x ARM Cortex-M3 based ZigBee SoCs and NCPs. Debug adapters bridge the packet trace port to the developer's PC via an Ethernet connection, where the Desktop Network Analyzer enables rapid development and debugging. Bundles of these tools and development boards are available below for each of the Ember chipsets.


EM35X-BBRD - Breakout Board

Breakout Boards serve as test beds for network hardware and applications. Each Breakout Board has an associated EM35x Module, which can be deployed as a node within a network application. Each Breakout Board connects with an InSight Adapter (ISA3) through two communication links: the InSight Port (ISP) and the DEI Port. This allows the Breakout Board's EM35x Module to interface with InSight Desktop (ISD) through the ISA's InSight Port and its wired Ethernet connection. These interconnections are described later in this chapter. The Breakout Boards also have a prototype breadboard area for application-specific hardware development.

Ember® EM35x Development Kits

Silicon Labs' Ember® EM35x development kits are an integral part of the Ember development environment, the premier embedded ZigBee wireless networking development platform, consisting of software and hardware tools that are the most comprehensive tools available for ZigBee product development. The foundation of these tools is the remote network monitoring and debugging capabilities built into every element of the development environment, starting with Silicon Labs' Ember chips, which have designed in a unique packet trace capability allowing every node in an Ember development network to report time-stamped radio traffic, API activity and application prints across an Ethernet LAN to a centralized PC-based software package - Desktop Network Analyzer - which analyses and filters the data for presentation to the user. EM35x development kits provide all the basic tools needed to start building these development and test networks. A key component is the debug adapter, which provides connectivity across an Ethernet LAN to nodes in the developer's network, allowing remote programming and collection of time-synchronized packet, API and application information from many nodes at once.


Ember® EM35x NCP Add-On Kit

The Ember® EM35x NCP add-on kit enables network co-processor development with an existing EM35x development kit, allowing designers to take maximum advantage of the superior power consumption, radio performance and CPU performance of the EM300 series chips in a network co-processor configuration.

InSight Adapter (ISA3)


InSight Adapter (ISA3) provides an efficient and configurable Debug Interface to the Development Kit Breakout Board for processing emulation and debug commands. It also provides an interface to InSight Desktop for monitoring and managing network data.
The ISA3 has the following components:
  • Debug Port interface to the Breakout Board's Extended Debug Interface Connector
  • InSight Port interface to the radio communication module, providing programming and debugging services
  • TCP/IP 10/100 Ethernet
