Intel I/O Controllers & Hubs include the Thunderbolt controllers and the ICH I/O Controller Hubs. The Thunderbolt is a transformational high-speed, dual protocol I/O that provides unmatched performance over current I/O technologies with 10Gbps bi-directional transfer speeds. It provides flexibility and simplicity by supporting both data (PCIe) and video (DisplayPort) on a single cable connection that can daisy-chain up to six devices. Thunderbolt technology enables flexible and innovative system designs and is ideal for thin profile systems and devices such as Ultrabooks. The ICH I/O Controller Hubs provide extensive I/O support with functions and capabilities that include PCI Express, PCI Local Bus, ACPI power management, enhanced DMA controller, interrupt controller, and timer functions. These controller hubs can include integrated Serial ATA host controllers with independent DMA operation, integrated IDE controller, USB host interface, integrated LAN controller, integrated 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet MAC, system management bus (SMBus), firmware hub (FWH) and serial peripheral interface (SPI) interfaces.

Intel's Thunderbolt I/O Controllers technology is a transformational high-speed, dual protocol I/O that provides unmatched performance over current I/O technologies with 10Gbps bi-directional transfer speeds. It provides flexibility and simplicity by supporting both data (PCIe) and video (DisplayPort) on a single cable connection that can daisy-chain up to six devices. Thunderbolt technology enables flexible and innovative system designs and is ideal for thin profile systems and devices such as Ultrabooks. Thunderbolt technology dramatically increases the data transfer rate enabling faster backup, editing and file sharing, significantly reducing the time to complete key tasks. Thunderbolt technology was specifically designed with inherently low latency and highly accurate time synchronization capabilities. ICH7 / ICH9 / ICH10 I/O Controller Hubs

Intel's ICH I/O Controller Hubs provide extensive I/O support with functions and capabilities that include PCI Express, PCI Local Bus, ACPI power management, enhanced DMA controller, interrupt controller, and timer functions. These controller hubs can include integrated Serial ATA host controllers with independent DMA operation, integrated IDE controller, USB host interface, integrated LAN controller, integrated 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet MAC, system management bus (SMBus), firmware hub (FWH) and serial peripheral interface (SPI) interfaces. These devices support Audio Codec ’97, Intel's High Definition Audio (HDA), Matrix Storage Technology (MST), Active Management Technology (AMT), Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O, Trusted Execution Technology, Quiet System Technology, and Integrated TPM 1.2, and JTAG Boundary Scan.
