Intel 2nd Generation Processors

Formerly Sandy Bridge

Intel's 2nd Generation Intel Core processor family is the next generation of 64-bit, multi-core processors built on 32nm process technology. The processor is designed for a two-chip platform. The two-chip platform consists of a processor and a Platform Controller Hub (PCH) and enables higher performance, lower cost, easier validation, and improved x-y footprint. The processor includes Integrated Display Engine, Processor Graphics, and an Integrated Memory Controller. The processor is designed for desktop or mobile platforms.

Intel's 2nd Gen Core Processor Family is the first microarchitecture utilizing 32nm technology. Its smaller transistors and new architectural design result in higher performance at lower power. This Intel microarchitecture features tighter integration of visual functionality, including graphics and media, into the processor. This integration is often called processor graphics. The ring architecture that connects the x86 processor cores together is now connected to the processor graphics. This ring interconnect enables high-speed and low-latency communication between the processor cores, processor graphics, and other integrated components, such as the memory controller and the display. The processor cores and graphics engine communicate through a shared cache, creating interesting possibilities for tight integration between the CPU and GPU.

The integration of process components also provides some new improvements to Intel Turbo Boost Technology. Dubbed Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0, this improved feature enables the processor to adjust the processor core and processor graphics frequencies to increase performance and maintain the allotted power/thermal budget. This means the processor can increase individual core speed or graphics speed as the workload dictates.


Core i7 Processors

Intel's 2nd Generation Core i7 Processors are 64-bit multi-core devices featuring up to 130W Max TDP and 6 or 8MB Intel Smart Cache. These 2- or 4-core i7 processors also offer up to 32GB Max Memory Size, depending on the memory type. Advanced technologies include Intel Virtualization Technology, Intel Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O, Intel Anti-Theft Technology, Intel My WiFi Technology, and 4G WiMAX Wireless Technology.

Pentium® and Celeron® Processors

 Intel's Generation 2 Celeron® Processors and Pentium® Processors are 64-bit devices built on 32nm process technology. Built for mobile platforms, these Intel processors are designed for a two-chip platform consisting of a processor and a Platform Controller Hub (PCH) and enable higher performance, lower cost, easier validation, and improved x-y footprint. These processors include an Integrated Display Engine, Processor Graphics, and an Integrated Memory Controller.

Intel's 827E Celeron Series provides a 1.4GHz clock speed, Max TDP of 17W, 16GB Max Memory, and an Intel HD Graphics processor. Intel's B840 Celeron Series provides a 1.9GHz clock speed, Max TDP of 35W, 16GB Max Memory, and an Intel HD Graphics processor. Intel's B960 Pentium Series provides a 2.2GHz clock speed, Max TDP of 35W, 16GB Max Memory, and an Intel HD Graphics processor.
