Rugged, Shielded Solutions for I/O Applications

3M offers a broad range of advanced, rugged I/O connectivity solutions to help you address today's high-speed signaling challenges, which demand excellent signal integrity, compact size and proven reliability.

3M builds proven, reliable I/O platforms used for system to system or "box to box" communications. Designed to meet the trend for smaller electronic devices requiring space-saving, shielded I/O ports, are 3M™ Mini Delta Ribbon (MDR), 3M™ Shrunk Delta Ribbon (SDR) and 3M™ Shielded Compact Ribbon (SCR) connectors, as well as ready-to-use cable assemblies and assembly tooling.

The flexibility and versatility of 3M's systems is reflected in the number of organizations which have adopted 3M's I/O solutions as products of choice. For example, 3M's high-speed systems have been used for low voltage differential signaling or 'LVDS' applications and the technology can also be found in industrial environments, such as Camera Link™ machine vision systems.

MDR Plugs

3M MDR Plug Connectors are designed around a fine pitch ribbon-style contact for reliable electrical connections. The MDR Plug Connectors provide wiper-on-wiper contact for reliable repetitive plugging and accept a wide variety of cable constructions including flat, round, twisted pair and twinax cables. The integral dimples of the MDR metal shell ensure proper grounding of the shroud before mating, reducing the possibility of a destructive ESD event between the boardmount and wiremount connectors. Most MDR connectors feature 360 degree shielding around the entire interface to help improve EMI and RFI protection in sensitive applications.

3M MDR Plug Connectors are available in both insulation displacement (IDC) and solder termination versions. In addition, 3M offers a range of EMI Junction shells in a variety of materials and cable exit angles, different attachment methods; as well as assembly tooling to support the wiremount products, which are available in 14 to 100 pin counts.

MDR Receptacles

The MDR boardmount receptacle plug connector is designed around a fine pitch ribbon-style contact for reliable electrical connection.

With pin counts from 14 to 100, thru-hole, surface mount and press fit mounting styles, and multiple connector orientations, the 3M™ MDR boardmount product line offers engineers great flexibility when designing I/O interfaces. MDR Boardmount connectors feature either latch stands to allow latching of a quick-release backshell, or threaded holes to allow thumbscrew attachment (with the proper hardware).

Most MDR connectors feature 360 degree shielding around the entire interface to help improve EMI and RFI protection in sensitive applications. MDR Assemblies

The 3M MDR High Speed Transmission System is a digital interconnect system designed to meet the needs of today's high performance data transmission applications.

Low Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS) technology meets the requirements for a general purpose, high bandwidth interface for serial and parallel data at speeds up to 655 Mbps. The LVDS Standard is based on the use of 100 Ohm differential impedance transmission medium from driver to receiver. Signal skew is the largest factor inhibiting speed within a system and can occur at all points along the transmission path: driver to receiver circuits, circuit board traces, cables and connectors. Both types of skew within pair skew and channel skew can prohibit optimum performance in high speed transmission systems. 3M MDR Connectors provide an excellent solution for the demanding requirements of LVDS applications.

SDR

The 3M Mini Camera Link™ (SDR) Connectors feature a high density .8mm pitch interface and a low height profile of 0.5mm. Using the same reliable ribbon contact system and polarized steel shell interface as the 3M Camera Link™ (MDR), the SDR connectors offer the same performance, but in a miniature size. The Shrunk Delta Ribbon (SDR) connector's innovative packaging design allows for drop-in replacement of existing MDR Camera Link® applications. The SDR connectors feature 30u" gold contact, polarized, metal EMI/ESD interface, jacksocket hardware, and RoHS compliance.

3M offers the 2mm I/O Interconnect System that conforms to the IEEE 1394 standard, often used in machine vision and industrial control applications. The robust ribbon style contact interface provides reliable, repetitive plugging/unplugging. The contact carries either signal or power to allow flexibility in the location of power supplies to peripheral devices. Available in board- or wire-mount, the I/O Interconnect System for IEEE 1394 features vibration resistance, shielding for EMI/RFI, and secure latching. The system is Suitable for challenging environments, such as a factory production floor.
