KEMET T500 Series High-Temperature Capacitors

KEMET Electronics T500 Series Capacitors are high-temperature MnO2 tantalum capacitors constructed for use in applications with operating temperatures up to 200ºC. The T500 Series Capacitors from KEMET deliver optimum performance characteristics in high-temperature applications, in addition to meeting or exceeding EIA standard 535BAAC.  Other T500 series features include capacitance range 33-220µF, rated voltage range 10-35V, Weibull Failure options B, standard gold-plated terminations, and operating temperature range from -55ºC to +200ºC. This series qualified at 1,000 hours of life when tested at 200ºC with 0.33V.

KEMET T528 Series Polymer Tantalum Capacitors

KEMET T528 Series Low ESL/Facedown Terminal Polymer Tantalum Capacitors are part of KEMET's Organic Capacitor (KO-CAP) product line. This series has ultra-low ESR and high capacitance (up to 470µF) in a package design that offers the lowest ESL in the market for this product type.  In addition, the T528 series offers exceptional performance for high-speed server and microprocessor decoupling and uses a different termination design that allows for a reduction in the inductance loop area. These capacitors come in a low profile 1.7mm case height and offer the advantage of improved capacitance retention frequencies of up to 1MHz.

KEMET's T530 Series Polymer Capacitors are Organic Capacitors (KO-CAPs) that offer high capacitance and high performance capability. The T530 Series Polymer KO-CAPs from KEMET offer the same advantages as the T520 Series but with higher capacitance (150µF-1500µF), higher ripple current handling capability, lower ESR range (4mΩ to 40mΩ), and 125ºC maximum operating temperature. The T530 Series Capacitors are packaged as multiple anodes to reduce the depth that the signal must penetrate, resulting in the highest capacitance and lowest ESR of any other type of surface mount capacitor.

KEMET T496 Series COTS Tantalum Chip Capacitors

KEMET T496 Series COTS Tantalum Chip Capacitors offer a "fail safe" design, with a patented built in fuse assembly. The built-in fuse element offers excellent protection from damaging short circuit conditions in applications where damaging high fault currents exist. Protection from costly circuit damage due to reversed installation is offered with this device. Applications for KEMET T496 Series COTS Tantalum Chip Capacitors include decoupling and filtering in computing and telecommunications end applications, such as high-end servers requiring built-in fuse capability.

KEMET T543 Series Polymer Tantalum COTS Capacitors

KEMET T543 Series Polymer Tantalum COTS Capacitors are made of conductive organic polymer, which replaces the traditionally used MnO2 as the cathode plate of the capacitor. This results in very low ESR, improved capacitance retention at high frequency and improved ripple current handling capability. The polymer technology also exhibits a benign failure mode which eliminates the ignition failures. Tantalum polymers may also be operated at voltages up to 90% of rated voltage for part types with rated voltages of ≤ 10 volts and up to 80% of rated voltage for part types > 10 volts with equivalent or better reliability than traditional MnO2 tantalum capacitors operated at 50% of rated voltage. Applications for KEMET T543 Series Polymer Tantalum COTS Capacitors include DC/DC converters, switch mode and point of load power supply, radar pulse capacitor and telecommunications (mobile phone and base station). Other general applications include decoupling and filtering in applications requiring low ESR or a benign failure mode.

KEMET C0G Flexible Termination (FT Cap) Capacitors - EXPANSION

NEW!  KEMET has expanded the Flexible Termination (FT Cap) MLCC product offerings to include FT Caps in a C0G dielectric. The Flexible Termination C0G MLCCs from KEMET offer superior flex performance (up to 5mm), capacitance range from 0.5pF to 0.47µF, and voltage range from 10V to 200V. 

KEMET's Flexible Termination (FT-CAP) multilayer ceramic chip capacitors (MLCCs) offer a unique, flexible termination system that is integrated with KEMET's standard termination materials. The flexible termination technology utilized in FT-CAP MLCCs was created to combat flex cracking, which is the primary failure mode of MLCCs. Flexible termination technology directs board flex stress away from the ceramic body and into the termination area, mitigating flex cracks that can lead to low IR and short circuit failures. This flexible termination technology within the FT-CAP MLCC provides superior flex performance (up to 5mm) over standard termination systems. The high voltage flexible termination (HV FT-CAP) MLCCs provide a voltage range of 500VDC-3000VDC. The Flex Term X8L MLCCs have high operating temperature up to 150ºC.

KEMET High CV Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCC) EXPANSION

KEMET has expanded it's High CV Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs) in X7R dielectric. Recent design and manufacturing technology innovations have led to significant increases in capacitance in EIA 0805 through 1812 case sizes and rated voltages of 500VDC, 630VDC and 1000VDC. KEMET maximum capacitance offerings are now up to seven times greater than those previously available. Typical applications include switch mode power supplies (input filters, resonators, tank circuits, snubber circuits, output filters), high voltage coupling and DC blocking, lighting ballasts, voltage multiplier circuits, DC/DC converters and coupling capacitors in Cuk converters.
 
KEMET High CV Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs) are a preferred capacitance solution, offering tremendous performance, reliability and cost advantages for circuit designers. Ceramics are non-polar devices which offer unsurpassed volumetric efficiency, delivering the highest capacitance in the smallest package sizes in the market. Available in a wide range of sizes, KEMET High CV MLCCs offer very low equivalent series resistance (ESR), exhibit excellent high frequency characteristics and are extremely reliable. MLCCs are monolithic devices that consist of laminated layers of specially formulated, ceramic dielectric materials interspersed with a metal electrode system. The layered formation is then fired at high temperature to produce a sintered and volumetrically efficient capacitance device. A conductive termination barrier system is integrated on the exposed ends of the chip to complete the connection.

KEMET T545 Series KO-Cap Polymer Pulse Capacitors

KEMET T545 Series KO-Cap Polymer Pulse Capacitors were developed primarily to harden or vault data in SSDs (Solid State Drives) in the event of a power outage.  The T545 Series KO-Cap Polymer Pulse Capacitor from KEMET acts as a back-up to the SSD's volatile memory source that will lose data in the event of a power loss. T545 Series Polymer Pulse Capacitors are capable of writing the stored or cached memory to the SSD's flash memory.  T545 Series features include capacitance range from 150µF-1800µF, voltage rating from 2.5V to 25V, low profile, and operating temperature range from -55ºC to +125ºC.

KEMET T550 Polymer Hermetic Seal Series (PHS)

KEMET T550 Polymer Hermetic Seal Series (PHS) is a tantalum capacitor with a Ta anode and Ta2O5 dielectric with a conductive organic polymer that replaces the MnO2 or wet electrolyte traditionally used as the capacitor's cathode plate. The organic polymer characteristic of the T550 Polymer Hermetic Seal Series (PHS) from KEMET results in very low ESR and improved capacitance retention at high frequency and low temperature.  The T550 PHS capacitor can be operated at voltages up to 80% of rated voltage with equivalent or better reliability than the traditional MnO2 or wet tantalum capacitors that operated at 50% of rated voltage. The capacitance range of the T550 tantalum capacitor is 100µF to 120µF @ 120 Hz/25ºC and its operating temperature range is -55ºC to 105ºC.

These newest T550 PHS caps from KEMET offer the highest voltage and deliverable energy with the lowest DC leakage and ESR in the industry, as well as the highest ripple current capability in their class.

KEMET T428 Series COTS Efficiency Facedown MnO2 Capacitors

The KEMET T428 Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) High Volumetric Efficiency Facedown MnO2 capacitor series provides the volumetric efficiency of a conformally coated capacitor in a pick-and-place friendly molded package that eliminates the "drops" characteristic of conformally coated tantalum surface mount devices.  The new package design of the T428 capacitor series from KEMET offers the highest CV/cc of any molded leadframe product.  Other major features of T428 capacitors include capacitance values of 15 to 470µF, voltage rating from 4 to 50Vdc, operating temperature range of -55ºC to +125ºC, halogen-free epoxy, and taped and reeled packaging per EIA 481-1.  These high reliability capacitors are used in the telecommunications, industrial, military, and aerospace markets.

KEMET T498 Series High Temperature Tantalum Capacitors

KEMET's T498 Series offers maximum performance characteristics in applications with operating temperatures up to 150ºC. The T498 Series High Temperature Tantalum Capacitors from KEMET are available in 5 standard EIA case sizes with RoHS terminations as standard. KEMET Open Mode FO-CAP MLCCs

KEMET's Open Mode Design (FO-CAP) MLCCs in X7R dielectric were designed to significantly minimize the potential of low IR or short circuit when the capacitor is forced to failure in a board stress flex situation. The Open Mode capacitor may experience capacitance loss with no chance of a short because a flex crack will not typically propagate across counter electrodes within the device's "active area." The lack of current leakage from the Open Mode flex crack eliminates localized heating, therefore, greatly reducing the risk of a catastrophic and costly failure event. Open Mode designed devices compliment KEMET's Floating Electrode (FE-CAP) and Floating Electrode with Flexible Termination (FF-CAP) products by providing a fail-safe design optimized for mid to high-range capacitance values.

KEMET Spice Software is freeware intended to aid design engineers in analyzing the performance of these capacitors over frequency, temperature, ripple, and DC bias conditions. The capacitor types include ceramic (MLCC), tantalum, polymer, and aluminum polymer capacitor types. Each capacitor type behaves differently to the conditions of the circuit, some showing no changes to moderate changes, while others showing very large changes to these conditions. Although it is a stand-alone, As a Windows based program, it is able to create files that can be imported into some commercial versions of SPICE software.

Setup / Installation File:
To set up the latest version of KEMET Spice on the targeted computer, you must use the setup program (20.5 MB) to load the required *.DLL and *.OCX files into the System32 directory. Because it will write these files to the System32 directory and write to the registry, you will need administrative rights to load the program successfully. The "Update" options are no longer offered as the setup file will uninstall the previous version of KEMET Spice before installing the latest version.

A "Freeware" declaration is in PDF format, adjacent to the setup download program. The instructional manual ("Instructions for KEMET Spice 3.9.6x.pdf") details the operation of this software.
NOTE - Windows Vista users:
You must right-click on the downloaded setup file and choose "Run as administrator" to install.

Here is the Excel spreadsheet of part numbers. It is a collection of part numbers used to guide the creation of models exported from KEMET Spice for the purpose of importing these models into the various commercial design programs. The intended location for this file is in the "CKTs" subdirectory of the directory where KEMET Sp.EXE is loaded, (i.e., "C:\Program Files\KEMET_Spice\CKTs\"). These represent mostly decade values of many styles, dielectrics, voltage ratings, and sizes; but it is intended to filled with only those part numbers that are used by each customer:

There are some part numbers which will not create models as these were included to demonstrate incorrect part numbers or restrictions if part number is not matched in KEMET Spice.

A method of predicting reliability based on stress and environmental factors has been available for many capacitor types. The calculations found in MIL-HDBK-217 (revision F) allow the ambient temperature, application bias, and environmental factors to create multipliers of established failure rates for many military part types. Based on the monitored reliability of the non-military, commercial part types, these same multipliers can be used to define a projected application failure rate. The failure rates are listed as “FIT” (failures in time), and “MTBF” (mean time before failure).

This calculator software is intended to follow the calculations spelled out in this handbook for the specific part types that KEMET manufactures: ceramic multilayer capacitors, solid-tantalum capacitors, and the latest, the solid-aluminum capacitors. Just enter the capacitance, the voltage rating, and the part type, and the calculations are immediate. Manipulate the temperature and the voltage to see the impacts instantly.

KEMET Flex Mitigation Solutions

KEMET Flex Mitigation MLCCs

Flexible Termination technology utilized in several series of KEMET surface mount multilayer ceramic chip capacitors (MLCCs) was developed to address flex cracks, the industry's primary failure mode for MLCCs. Flexible termination directs circuit board stress away from the ceramic body and into the termination area, reducing the risk of mechanical damage to the component that can result in low IR and short circuit failures.
